                                                     TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN

It is my pleasure to support the amazing work of SAALED in southern Africa under the inspired leadership of its President, Dr Melodie Hougaart.

As a Professor of Special Education who has had the privilege of visiting and working in South Africa and Namibia over the last 7 years, I am aware of the needs of students with disabilities and those with additional learning difficulties as well as the need for a strong advocacy body in southern Africa to represent the needs of learners, their parents and the workers in the area. SAALED has risen to the challenges of both advocacy and professional development roles. It has made a significant, if not immeasurable, contribution to the education and welfare of vulnerable learners by advocating for their full and proper inclusion in regular schools.

Over the years I have been invited by SAALED to deliver keynote addresses and workshops at their conferences, to liaise with government officers within the educational ministry and to work with parents, therapists and classroom facilitators. I have worked in several large provincial cities as well as in Johannesburg and Pretoria. In 2009 SAALED has moved to create a branch in Namibia where I was able to deliver professional development sessions and to liaise with government officials.

In all instances, I was able to observe or come to understand first hand the overwhelming needs of children with learning differences which impact every classroom in southern Africa. These needs are chronic and pervasive and the role of SAALED in advocating for learners and their inclusion is demanding and exacting.

I highly recommend the work of this non-profit organization and its focus on the potential of African children. I support all its efforts to improve educational opportunities, to highlight local achievement and to harness the potential of African and international talent to meet its comprehensive goals.

I am happy to expand on any of my comments should it be necessary.

Yours sincerely,

Loretta
