SAALED LEARNER FACILITATOR TRAINING COURSE
SAALED has developed a Learner Facilitator training course from the culmination of many years of input from various experts both nationally and internationally from organisations and individuals associated with SAALED.

Recommended for people with some experience in the field of education as well as for students and parents interested in working in inclusive educational settings. The maximum number of delegates on a course is sixteen.

COURSE OUTLINE
Day One: Inclusive education and introduction to facilitation
Day Two: Child development and learning
Day Three: School visits in the morning and specific disorders of childhood in the afternoon
Day Four: Developing the relationships in the classroom
Day Five: Methods of facilitation

Delegates will each receive a course manual.

PRESENTERS:

Jackie Staniforth, retired Principal of Bellavista Remedial School, qualified as a Primary School Teacher at Durham University, U.K., Specialist Teacher of the Deaf, Manchester University, U.K. and Remedial Education Specialist (Cum Laude) at University of Witwatersrand, S.A.
She has taught in multi-cultural school environments in U.K., Kenya and South Africa and has worked with pupils from pre-school to High School levels, interacting and teaching mainstream and special needs children (in particular the inclusion of hearing impaired children).

She worked part time in the Department of Specialised Education at the University of Witwatersrand SA and is an active Executive Board Member of the South African Association for Learning and Educational Differences.

Robyn Hays: Educational Psychologist, PGCE, M.Ed (Ed Psych)
Robyn has been involved with the facilitation of learners with the high support needs since 2003. She has experience as both a facilitator and a teacher of special needs children. She has run a number of focus groups with various facilitators in school settings. She currently works as part of a multidisciplinary team at a special needs school and in private practice.

BARRIER SPECIFIC SKILLS TRAINING AND INCLUSION

MOTIVATION
This project falls in line with the Millennium Goal No 2 of Universal Primary Education for All as well as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Article 24.2(d) ie “persons with disabilities are able to receive the support required within the general education system, to facilitate their effective education.” White Paper 6 (2001) on Inclusive Education aims to ensure quality education for learners with barriers to learning including those living with disabilities.

In July of 2010 SAALED was requested by the Gauteng Department of Inclusive Education as well as with the endorsement of the National Department of Inclusive Education, to train educators, parents, class assistants and voluntary workers on specific barriers to learning due to disability, to enable effective inclusion.

PROGRAMME DETAILS
One two hour session per month over seven months, during 2011, will be trained by experts in the different disability fields as well as an experienced educator providing specific focus on classroom accommodation and support. At least 40 previously disadvantaged delegates per training session will be sponsored. see the following –

Guidelines for Full-Service / Inclusive Schools, 2009
The Guidelines were approved in July 2009 by the Council for Education Ministers for implementation in provinces and schools to guide the implementation of Inclusive Education at a practical level. All schools have to work towards meeting the requirements as outlined in the Guidelines. Indicators are provided for how the principles of inclusivity can be met in all areas such as management, culture, curriculum, physical and material resources, community involvement, etc.
