OUTREACH
strives to meet
the training needs of previously disadvantaged educators and parents
in order to assist them with inclusive practices.
This is done in the form of Congress outreach and specific detailed
training programmes. All outreach training is structured according to
the needs expressed in the community.
It is a SAALED tradition that after Congress workshops are held for
previously disadvantaged educators in rural areas. These are presented
by both international and local speakers who presented at Congress.

In 2011, at the request of the Western Cape Department of Education
workshops will be held in Worcester and Saldanha Bay.
Outreach workshops will also be held in Venda and Soweto.
In 2010 in Gauteng ten previously disadvantaged ECD practitioners were
trained in pre-literacy and pre-numeracy skills using cost effective
resources. Each delegate trained colleagues at their grade level resulting
in up to 900 learners benefiting from this training.
In 2011 seven sessions on barrier specific training will be done to
allow previously disadvantaged educators and parents from Soweto, Eldorado
Park and Lenasia to access expert information on supporting learners
with barriers in inclusive settings.
The Southern Cape branch of SAALED also plays an active role in serving
the schools and communities in outlying parts of the district attempting
to identify and address specific needs. In May 2010 SAALED members
delivered an interactive talk at Rheenendal Primary School on the topic
Listening for Learning. All staff members, including the principal,
attended and participated with questions and lively contributions.
The discussion covered effective listening conditions, healthy attitudes
towards listening, the development of listening skills, and specific
listening required for reading and writing. The influence of classroom
discourse on the development of literacy, numeracy, and maths skills
also proved to be of great interest to the teachers. This kind
of informal "round table" presentation allows teachers to
introduce their own areas of concern and thereby to reap maximum benefit
from the session.
Shared Experience
The Inclusive and Supportive Education congress at Queen’s University
in Belfast is one of the world’s premier conferences on inclusive
education. Six SAALED members became part of an international audience
of academics, policymakers and practitioners who interacted with colleagues
from around the world during symposiums, roundtable discussion, debates
and workshops. Inclusive and supportive education for all learners regardless
of age, background or individual needs was promoted to the sharing of
research, knowledge and expertise of the many delegates.
ISEC was organise around five core themes, diversity, inclusion, children’s
rights, collaboration and debates. The SAALED team comprising of Dr
Elizabeth Walton, Gugu Masondo, Nick Serra, and Priya Singh
presented a seminar entitled “Inclusion in South Africa: Good
in Parts”, who did SAALED proud both as representatives of our
association and as fellow South Africans. Their shared aspects of inclusive
practice in varied contexts within our schooling system.
The SAALED team was most privileged to spend time with Professor Roy
McConkey in Belfast.
Attendance at international congresses of this level creates opportunities
for networking with people with a passion for inclusive education. SAALED
will be welcoming a number of these international delegates to the SAALED
Congress in Cape Town.
